Microfibre, wool or foam: which cutting pad suits your paint?

Safe-Shield Microfibre Cutting Pad with hook-and-loop backing and a white polishing face

For many paint finishes, a foam cutting pad is an easy-to-control starting point. Microfibre and wool are options when you need greater cutting power on a suitable machine. What matters is the specific combination, paint and test-spot result, rather than the material name alone.

Foam: graded options with clear roles

Foam pads come in different firmness levels and structures. A finishing pad is not a substitute for a heavy-cut pad simply because both use the same base material. The green Max Cut Pad gives you a matched combination for more pronounced defects; on very hard paint, our Ultra Cut Dual Pad may provide greater cutting power.

The particularly firm Dual Pad is not the default choice for sensitive paint. Always assess how much material it actually removes and which marks it leaves. For the overall pad grades, see Which polishing pad for which polish?.

Microfibre: high cutting power with clean fibres

The Microfibre Cutting Pad works through many fibres contacting the surface. It can help with more pronounced scratches on a suitable dual-action machine. The fibres need an even supply of polish and regular removal of residue. Clogged, matted fibres change how the pad works.

Our microfibre pad is intended for free-spinning and gear-driven dual-action machines; we do not recommend it for rotary polishers. Choose the size according to the hook-and-loop attachment area and backing plate. Check the actual variant rather than only the larger outer pad diameter.

Wool: for more pronounced defects on a dual-action machine

Our Wool Cutting Pad, with short wool fibres, is designed for high cutting power on a dual-action polisher. It is an option for experienced users when a less aggressive combination is insufficient. Intensive cutting generally requires a subsequent finishing stage.

Not all wool pads are the same: different constructions are available for different drive types. We do not recommend our Wool Pad for rotary machines.

Choosing for your paint

  1. Start on clean, cool gloss paint with a small test spot. Test a less aggressive combination first.
  2. If the result is insufficient, deliberately change the pad or polish. Compare correction, finish and heat build-up.
  3. Keep the pad flat, the fibres or foam clean and the product amount small. Change saturated pads.
  4. Wipe off residue and inspect the result. Plan Perfect Finish with a suitable finishing pad after cutting.

Changing pads often makes more sense than adding ever more pressure. See Polishing a test spot for the decision process and How many polishing pads per car? to plan spare pads.

Finishing is part of the material decision

A pad can reduce scratches quickly while leaving fine marks of its own. The final finish matters, rather than only the first stage. Perfect Finish with the Finishing Pad refines suitable paint surfaces; on very sensitive paint, the Ultra Soft Pad may be useful.

See Cleaning polishing pads for care during and after work. Do not continue using damaged or heavily clogged pads on the paint.

Frequently asked questions

Is wool always more aggressive than microfibre?

Usually, yes, but construction, polish, drive type and paint influence cutting performance. Material names alone cannot provide a reliable ranking for every system.

Can I use our microfibre pad on a rotary polisher?

We recommend our Microfibre Cutting Pad for free-spinning and gear-driven dual-action machines, not rotary polishers.

Which pad dimension matters?

The hook-and-loop attachment area must fit the backing plate. The outer polishing face may be larger. Check the selected variant’s specifications.

Do I always need Black-One and Perfect Finish after cutting?

There is no fixed three-product sequence. Plan a suitable finishing stage after Max Cut. Black-One is a separate one-step option for appropriate defects.
