Ceramic coating: what are the disadvantages and limitations?

Safe-Shield Final PRO Ceramic Coating in a brown glass bottle

The main disadvantages of a ceramic coating are the preparation involved, the care required during application and the limited options for correcting cured errors. A ceramic coating also does not make paint scratch-proof or maintenance-free. Water spots and stone chips are still possible.

This does not mean a coating is the wrong choice. It helps you decide with realistic expectations: if you want easier regular maintenance and can organise application properly, a ceramic coating is a sensible option. If you want protection you can apply casually and then forget about, a simpler solution is a better fit.

Which problems does a ceramic coating not prevent?

Scratches and stone chips

A ceramic coating does not replace paint protection film. Stone impacts, dirty wash tools and dry rubbing can still damage the paint. If your main goal is protecting exposed front panels from stone chips, consider suitable paint protection film as a separate solution.

9H and 10H: does this make the paint harder?

A ceramic coating does not make the paint underneath it harder. It forms an additional, thin protective layer. This can influence the resistance of the coated surface, but it does not turn sensitive paint into scratch-proof paint.

Claims such as ‘9H’ or ‘10H’ are marketed as exceptionally high hardness. They often refer to a pencil hardness test, rather than the Mohs mineral hardness scale. Without a clearly documented test method, substrate and tested coating system, the number is primarily a marketing claim. It does not tell you how well your car will resist wash-induced scratches or other everyday wear.

Multiple layers: what are base coats and top coats?

In these systems, a foundation layer, the base coat, is applied first. It is then covered by the top coat, for example to add slickness and stronger water beading. The base coat may be a ceramic coating; depending on the system, the top coat may be another type of protectant, such as a polymer sealant. This does not automatically mean two equivalent ceramic layers.

For us, a high number of layers alone is not proof of quality. Ask which products are actually applied, what each layer does and what additional benefit is substantiated. Well-matched multi-layer systems do exist. Marketing becomes questionable when ‘more layers’ is used to claim greater hardness or longer protection without a clear explanation. The word ‘polymer’ alone does not establish the composition either; ceramic coatings can also contain cross-linked polymer structures.

Our Final PRO is designed as a single-layer system. Proper preparation, even application and correct curing are what matter; additional layers are not part of its intended application.

Water spots and bonded dirt

Even beading water can dry on the surface and leave deposits. Bird droppings should also be removed promptly. A smooth, water-repellent surface makes maintenance easier, but does not eliminate it. If you see spots, first distinguish deposits from lasting surface changes — our guide to removing water spots from a ceramic coating explains how.

Existing paint defects

A coating does not remove wash-induced scratches. If they bother you, assess and, if needed, correct them before coating. However, you do not need to aggressively polish every paint finish as a precaution. See Which polish should you use before a ceramic coating? to make the right decision.

Where does the extra work arise?

Preparation and working conditions

The paint must be clean and prepared for the coating. Polishing oils and unsuitable maintenance residues interfere with the process. Our Ultra Degreaser handles the final cleaning of suitable surfaces. It replaces neither washing nor any necessary paint correction.

For Final PRO, you need a dry, clean, well-lit and ventilated workspace at +15 to +25 °C. Direct sunlight and hot surfaces are unsuitable. Check compatibility in an inconspicuous area first and follow the protective measures on the label and safety data sheet.

Visible residue after application

If excess product is left behind, high spots can form: uneven, visible coating residue. While fresh, these can be corrected within the specified inspection window. After curing, simple wiping is often no longer enough; suitable gloss paint may require abrasive correction followed by reapplication. See Ceramic coating high spots for the correct approach.

Waiting time immediately after application

Plan the drying period before starting. At around 20 °C, Final PRO is water-resistant and the vehicle is ready to drive after approximately twelve hours; full curing takes five days. Do not wash the vehicle normally during the first five days; climatic conditions can change these times. Still remove isolated heavy contamination such as bird droppings carefully. Full details are in Curing, rain and the first wash.

Is a ceramic coating worthwhile for daily drivers and cars parked outside?

Easier cleaning can be useful, especially on regularly used vehicles. What matters is not whether the car is driven daily, but whether you maintain it properly afterwards. A car parked outside can benefit too, but application and the initial drying period require a suitable sheltered space.

It is unrealistic to expect rain to keep the car clean by itself afterwards. Frequently using heavily contaminated brushes or allowing deposits to dry on permanently sacrifices some of the benefit. Our article on care after ceramic coating explains a suitable routine.

We cover costs and potential durability in more detail in our guides to ceramic coating costs and ceramic coating durability.

Which option suits your circumstances?

  • You can prepare properly and allow time for drying: Our Final PRO Ceramic Coating is intended for longer-term protection of suitable surfaces. Achievable durability depends on preparation, application and care.
  • You want matching accessories together: The Final PRO Kit also contains 500 ml Ultra Degreaser, four small applicators and ten 300 GSM towels. It does not replace washing or polishing equipment.
  • You want easier top-ups: Our Soft-Coat Polymer Sealant is a simpler alternative. See Wax, polymer sealant or ceramic coating for the differences.

Frequently asked questions

Can a ceramic coating damage paint?

Errors in preparation, product selection or application can cause damage or extensive reworking. Check the surface and compatibility, work in suitable conditions and follow the inspection and wipe-off times.

Is a ceramic coating scratch-proof?

No. Even coated paint can be scratched by particles, incorrect washing or other mechanical abrasion. The coating does not replace gentle maintenance.

Is a car without a garage unsuitable?

Not automatically. Everyday outdoor parking does not rule out a ceramic coating. However, application and initial drying require suitable conditions; arrange a sheltered workspace.

Do I still need to wash the car after coating?

Yes. Road grime and deposits still need to be removed. The coating is intended to make that process easier, not unnecessary.

What is different about matte paint?

The matte texture must not be polished smooth during correction. Final PRO is also intended for suitable matte paint; a small test area and confident application are particularly important. Read Ceramic coating for matte paint.
