How to clean an Alcantara steering wheel and remove greasy build-up

Illustration: gently cleaning an Alcantara steering wheel with a microfibre towel.

Clean a shiny, greasy Alcantara steering wheel with minimal moisture, a suitable cleaner and gentle movements. Apply our Leather Soft Cleaner sparingly to the Double Scrub Pad, loosen dirt one section at a time and immediately lift it away with a clean microfibre towel. Judge whether the surface is even and grippy again only once it has dried completely.

Our Pro Leather Cleaning Kit contains the cleaner with a foaming pump, a Double Scrub Pad and a separate wipe-off towel. Despite the name, the combination is also suitable for Alcantara. A successful test area, light pressure and controlled removal of residue are essential.

Why does an Alcantara steering wheel become shiny?

Skin oils, sweat, hand cream and everyday dirt repeatedly collect on the same grip areas. Deposits can bind the fine fibres together, while regular friction compresses the nap. The surface then looks darker, smoother or shinier and feels less like fabric.

Alcantara is a synthetic microfibre material, not leather. Its fine nap determines the feel and influences light reflection. A darker patch alone therefore does not prove there is dirt. Nap direction and wear also change its appearance.

First check which material your steering wheel actually has. Suede and other microfibre coverings can look similar. For a rim covered in coated smooth leather, see Cleaning a leather steering wheel. On wheels combining materials, treat each area appropriately.

Which products do you need for cleaning?

You do not need a large collection of products for an Alcantara steering wheel. The three components in our Pro Leather Cleaning Kit each have a specific role:

  • Leather Soft Cleaner, 250 ml with foaming pump: loosens skin oils and typical everyday dirt. Apply the foam to the pad to distribute the amount precisely.
  • Double Scrub Pad: helps loosen deposits. Both sides have nylon scrub fibres. Move the clean pad over the covering with light pressure; it is not a tool for vigorous scrubbing.
  • Edgeless 300 GSM microfibre towel, 40 × 40 cm: picks up loosened dirt and cleaner. Fold the towel several times and regularly turn to a clean side.

Important when using the Double Scrub Pad: It does not have a separate soft microfibre side for wipe-off. That is what the towel in the kit is for. For heavy soiling, have extra clean towels ready to avoid spreading the loosened dirt around again.

In addition, you only need clean water and, if necessary, a very soft, clean brush for loose dust and later gentle alignment of the dry nap. Do not use a pad that has previously absorbed wheel cleaner, polish or oily maintenance products.

Cleaning an Alcantara steering wheel in 6 steps

1. Allow the wheel to cool and protect the working area

Park the vehicle safely and turn off any steering wheel heating. Work on a cool rim, out of direct sunlight. Have a clean towel ready to protect adjacent areas. Keep buttons, gaps, seams and the area around the airbag as dry as possible. Nothing needs to be dismantled for cleaning.

2. Remove loose dirt gently

Carefully pick up dust and loose particles with a soft towel or very soft brush. Check the pad for hard particles too. Rubbing dry grip areas vigorously at this stage puts unnecessary strain on the nap.

3. Clean a small test area

Apply a little Leather Soft Cleaner to the Double Scrub Pad and gently work on a small, inconspicuous area. Immediately remove dirt and foam with the towel and let the area dry. Check the colour, nap and grip. Clean the rest of the rim only once the test shows compatibility without unwanted changes.

4. Work around the rim in sections

Work on a short section at a time. Spread the foam with a few gentle movements and let the pad loosen the build-up. Do not spray the cleaner directly onto the steering wheel or soak the covering. Be particularly cautious around seams and transitions between materials.

If a patch is stubborn, do not automatically increase pressure. First remove the residue and check whether another gentle cleaning cycle is needed at all. A fixed number of pump strokes would not be helpful: what matters is using the product sparingly and avoiding squeezing liquid from the pad into the covering.

5. Immediately remove loosened dirt and cleaner

Move the clean 300 GSM towel over the treated section without vigorous rubbing. Turn it as soon as one side becomes dirty. The pad loosens the build-up; the separate towel removes it from the surface.

If a film of cleaner remains, gently lift it away with a clean towel side lightly dampened with clean water and well wrung out. Then use a dry side to absorb excess moisture. Do not push liquid into seams or gaps.

6. Allow to dry completely before assessing

Let the steering wheel air-dry with good ventilation. Do not use a hot-air dryer or steering wheel heating to speed things up. Damp Alcantara often looks darker, so comparing it immediately after wiping can be misleading.

If necessary, gently align the completely dry nap with a very soft brush. This is not vigorous brushing. Do not drive until the rim is completely dry, free of cleaner residue and safely grippy.

The wheel is still smooth or shiny: what now?

Compare the cleaned area with a less-used section under similar lighting and with the nap facing the same direction. Three observations help you decide:

  • Dirt is still being released and the nap remains intact: Another gentle cleaning cycle may help. Use minimal product again and assess once dry.
  • The rim feels sticky after drying: First check for remaining residue. If the change persists despite proper wipe-off, stop and have the material assessed.
  • The fibres are thinning, missing in places or forming pills: This is not a job for ever-stronger cleaner. Cleaning cannot replace missing fibres. Noticeable wear calls for a professional assessment, potentially by an automotive trimmer.

Pilling: what are the small fibre balls on Alcantara?

Pilling occurs when fibres form small balls on the surface. Friction during use can contribute; vigorous scrubbing or stiff brushes can encourage it. Do not try to make a shiny steering wheel feel plush again through more force. Razors, abrasives and melamine cleaning sponges are not suitable DIY repair tools for the rim either.

How to keep your Alcantara steering wheel cleaner for longer

Remove loose dust regularly and clean as needed before heavy build-up forms. Freshly applied hand cream or dirty work gloves can leave new residue more quickly. A fixed schedule for intensive cleaning is not necessary.

Leather grease, leather balm and oily conditioners do not belong on Alcantara. They do not restore the nap and can worsen the grip. Steam is not a useful shortcut for this process either. Cleaning with proper residue removal is enough; a shiny conditioning film is not the goal on a steering wheel.

Rinse used tools thoroughly after cleaning and let them dry. For towel care, see How to wash microfibre towels properly. Our Scrub Pad guide explains the differences between pad variants and where they help in the interior.

Cleaner, pad and wipe-off towel together: Our Pro Leather Cleaning Kit for leather and Alcantara provides all three components for this process. If you already have some of the cleaner or tools, Leather Soft Cleaner and the Double Scrub Pad are also available separately.

Frequently asked questions about Alcantara steering wheels

Can I clean Alcantara on a steering wheel with leather cleaner?

Our Leather Soft Cleaner is also suitable for Alcantara. This does not mean every leather cleaner is suitable. Test the cleaner and tool combination on a small area first, use it sparingly and remove residue immediately.

Will a shiny Alcantara steering wheel look new again?

If deposits are binding the nap together, gentle cleaning can significantly improve its appearance and grip. It will not repair missing fibres, heavy wear or material damage. What matters is its dry condition after cleaning.

Can I use the Double Scrub Pad on Alcantara?

Yes, with a suitable cleaner, light pressure and a successful test area. Both sides are scrub sides. Use the separate microfibre towel to remove loosened dirt, and do not simply increase mechanical force on stubborn patches.

How long does an Alcantara steering wheel need to dry?

It depends on the moisture used, temperature and ventilation. Allow enough time with the vehicle parked, overnight if necessary. A fixed number of minutes is not reliable. Before driving, the rim must be completely dry and safely grippy.

Are washing-up liquid or a melamine cleaning sponge good alternatives?

For this process, we recommend a cleaner specifically suited to the task. Residue and material compatibility are harder to assess with household products. A melamine sponge is abrasive and can alter the fine nap.
