You can protect matte paint with a suitable ceramic coating. Our Final PRO is very well suited for matte finishes: the matte look is preserved, while the color may appear slightly richer and the finish subtly refined with a satin-matte sheen. If in doubt, we recommend assessing the result on a small, inconspicuous area before full application.
With matte paint, the goal is of course not maximum gloss but an even finish. Preparation and wipe-off therefore require particular care. Here we explain how to proceed and which mistakes cannot simply be polished out later.
Does a ceramic coating change the gloss level of matte paint?
That depends on the product used and the specific surface. A ceramic coating for glossy paint is not automatically suitable for every matte finish. You must check the manufacturer’s approval in each case.
Our recommendation for Final PRO: The paint remains matte. A slight deepening of color and a satin-matte feel are possible. If necessary, test the application first on a small area and assess the dry section from different angles before coating the entire vehicle.
Compare the test area with an adjacent, untreated spot. This is about both material compatibility and your desired appearance. If you expect an absolutely unchanged look or are unsure, clarify the result before large-area application with us or an experienced detailer.
Matte paint and matte film are different substrates. Don’t automatically transfer a successful process on paint to a film without testing. For films, the film manufacturer’s specifications and the suitability of all cleaners used also apply.
How do you prepare matte paint without changing the look?
1. Clean gently instead of rubbing hard
Work on cool paint in the shade. First remove heavy dirt without contact, then wash with a shampoo suitable for matte paint and with clean, soft tools. Avoid products that are specifically designed to increase gloss or leave unknown care layers behind.
Stubborn insect remains, sap or other deposits must be removed using a method that is explicitly suitable for this matte paint. More pressure is not a safe solution. Abrasive products and uncontrolled claying can cause visible changes. Claying with so-called clay sponges is one option if done gently with a suitable lubricant. If deposits cannot be removed gently, seek professional advice before continuing.
2. Do not polish matte paint like gloss paint
A conventional abrasive paint polish is not part of the preparation for matte paint. It can destroy the surface structure that creates the matte look and cause shiny spots. For this reason, even a single scratch must not simply be “touched up” with a small polished area.
Existing scratches, stains and glossy spots will generally remain visible with a transparent coating on matte paint, or at best be slightly visually reduced – this should be clearly understood beforehand.
3. Dry and degrease on a suitable surface
Dry the vehicle thoroughly, including water remaining on trim and mirrors. For preparing suitable surfaces we use Ultra Degreaser. If in doubt, test compatibility on an inconspicuous area and follow the instructions. For application afterwards, the paint must be clean, dry and free from interfering care or oil films.
Using Final PRO on matte paint
Plan a dry, clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated work area at +15 to +25 °C. Never work in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces. Read the full instructions and observe the safety measures before you start.
- Create a test area: Check material compatibility and any possible darkening of color in advance. Only continue once the result matches the desired appearance.
- Coating small areas: Spread a small amount of Final PRO evenly. Start with about 60 × 60 cm or smaller, easily controlled sections.
- Remove excess in time: With Final PRO, wipe off after about 3 minutes using a soft 300 GSM microfiber towel with no pressure. Our 300 GSM coating microfiber towels are ideal for this.
- Check directly from several angles: Look for cloudy areas, darker wipe marks, and excess product at transitions. Visible high spots can be lightly wiped for up to 10 minutes after application. Do not unnecessarily delay normal wipe-off until this limit!
Final PRO is a one-layer ceramic coating. An additional layer is not a reliable fix for an uneven first application. If an area can no longer be wiped off cleanly, stop and clarify the further treatment with us.
Do not polish out high spots on matte paint. The abrasive correction that is possible on gloss paint can permanently alter the surface here. Our article Removing streaks after ceramic coating helps with assessment; for matte paint, correction requires an individual professional evaluation.
You can also get the coating and accessories in the Final PRO ceramic coating kit. You’ll find additional components in the ceramic coating category.
How do you care for ceramic-coated matte paint?
First let the coating cure. For Final PRO at around 20 °C: water-resistant and ready to drive after about 12 hours, fully cured and washable after 5 days. Times may vary depending on climate. During this phase, follow the specific notes under Letting a ceramic coating cure: rain and the first wash.
Afterwards, regular gentle cleaning and careful drying remain important. Choose care products that are suitable for both the coating and the matte paint. A detailer with a strong gloss boost is not automatically the right choice, even if it works well on a glossy ceramic surface.
Water residue can also dry on coated matte paint and leave marks. Remove it promptly after washing without rubbing hard. For stains, first identify the cause and only use cleaners that are explicitly suitable. Our article Removing water spots from ceramic coatings explains the difference between deposits and damage; a polish that may be suitable for gloss paint there is not a recommendation for matte paint.
What can a ceramic coating on matte paint not do?
It does not make the paint scratch-proof or immune to every type of contamination. Water spots, bird droppings and other residues still need to be managed. A previously polished glossy spot will not become matte again through the coating, and existing scratches will not simply be repaired.
The benefit lies in the additional surface protection and easier maintenance when applied correctly. Precisely because matte paint cannot be corrected like gloss paint, careful test areas, small work sections and controlled use of cleaners are worthwhile.
Frequently asked questions
Is Final PRO suitable for matte paint?
Yes. Final PRO is very well suited for matte paints. The matte look is preserved; a slight deepening of color and a satin-matte feel are possible. Test first on a small area.
Will Final PRO make my matte paint glossy?
Final PRO does not turn matte paint into high gloss. However, the surface can appear a bit richer and slightly satin-matte. Decide in advance whether you like this change by testing on a small trial area.
Does matte paint need to be polished before ceramic coating?
No. A conventional abrasive polish can alter the matte structure and create glossy patches. Prepare the paint with suitable cleaning and degreasing; existing defects require their own assessment.
Can I use any ceramic detailer on matte paint?
No. The detailer must also be suitable for the matte surface and the desired appearance. Products that add gloss can change the look. Check the specifications and, if in doubt, test in an inconspicuous area.
Does the same guide apply to matte film?
Not as a blanket rule. Film and paint are different materials. You must also check the film manufacturer’s approvals and the compatibility of all products used.
