A car wash bucket with a grit guard helps keep your wash mitt and wash water cleaner. For regular hand washing we recommend two buckets: one with shampoo solution and one with clear water for rinsing. The grit guard supports dirt separation but does not replace thorough rinsing or a water change.

Car wash bucket: 12 or 20 liters?
Choose 12 liters if a compact bucket that’s easier to store is important to you. Choose 20 liters if you want more water reserve and space for rinsing out your wash media. The size of the car is only one factor. Just as important are the level of dirt, wash frequency, and whether you can refill with water.
12 liters: compact for small setups
A 12-liter bucket is a good fit if you have limited storage space or often carry your wash gear around. For maintaining a regularly washed vehicle it can be sufficient. Replace dirty water in good time; don’t keep working with cloudy water just to finish with one fill.
20 liters: more reserve and room to move
A 20-litre bucket offers more space for water, grit guard and wash mitt. This is practical for larger vehicles or longer wash processes. You don’t have to fill it to the brim: the actual amount of water determines the carrying weight and shampoo dosage. Leave enough headroom so that water doesn’t constantly slosh over the edge when rinsing.
What does a grit guard in the wash bucket do?
A grit guard creates distance from the bottom of the bucket, where some of the loosened particles can settle. You can gently rub out the mitt on the suitable insert and rinse it above it. This is intended to keep less settled dirt from going straight back into the fibres.
A grit guard is not a fine filter and not a scratch-proof guarantee. Fine particles can remain in the water. Therefore, always check the mitt and change heavily soiled water. A bucket with a grit guard must also be cleaned thoroughly after washing.
Make sure the insert sits correctly and securely. If an insert is crooked or floating, correct its position according to its instructions before using it as a dirt trap. Do not press down on the insert with force and do not stir up dirt from the bottom.
How the two-bucket method works
The advantage comes from a fixed sequence: wash, rinse out in the separate bucket, pick up fresh shampoo water. This way you bring less dirt straight back into the shampoo solution.
- Pre-clean the vehicle. Remove heavy dirt without contact. If you use a foamer, you’ll find the process under How to use snow foam correctly. The two-bucket method only starts after that.
- Prepare both buckets cleanly. Rinse out the buckets and suitable grit guards. Bucket A gets water and Wash & Foam car shampoo, bucket B clear rinse water. Fill in enough water so you can thoroughly rinse out the mitt above the grit guard.
- Measure by water volume. Dose our Wash & Foam at 60 ml per 10 liters of water. For 20 liters of water, use 120 ml accordingly. A 20-liter bucket filled with only 10 liters of water still needs 60 ml. What matters is the actual amount of water, not the number printed on the bucket.
- Wash small areas from top to bottom. Soak the car wash mitt with shampoo water and guide it with light pressure over a manageable section. Heavily soiled lower areas come last, ideally with a separate mitt.
- Rinse in the rinse bucket. After each section, rinse the mitt thoroughly in bucket B and check for particles. Only then pick up shampoo water from bucket A again.
- Change water and mitt in time. If the water becomes noticeably dirty or particles remain in the fibers, stop and replace the water and/or mitt. Then rinse the vehicle thoroughly and dry gently.

Car wash bucket with lid: When is it worth it?
A lid is especially practical if you transport wash accessories to a wash bay or store the clean, dry bucket protected from dust. For the Safe-Shield bucket, a screw-on lid with rubber seal is available as an option.
Keep the thread and seal clean, close the lid correctly and transport the bucket upright and secured against tipping over. Wet microfibres should not be left in a closed bucket for long periods: wash them and let them dry completely before storing them clean.
Which wash bucket setup suits you?
- You already have shampoo and a wash mitt: Add two suitable car wash buckets with grit guards. You mainly need a lid for transport and storage.

Q&A: Car wash buckets and the two-bucket method
Can I use a normal household bucket?
Yes, as long as it is clean, large enough, and free from sharp edges or residues from other cleaners. A car wash bucket mainly offers space, stability and the option of using a suitable grit guard insert.
Do I need two buckets of the same size?
No. What matters is that you can thoroughly clean the mitt in the rinse bucket and have enough shampoo solution available. Identical sizes only make storage and a standardized process easier.
Do I need shampoo in both buckets?
No. In the classic two-bucket method, only the wash bucket contains shampoo. The second bucket holds clear water for rinsing the mitt.
Does a grit guard prevent all wash swirls?
No. It supports dirt separation. Thorough pre-wash, clean microfibres, light pressure and timely water changes remain crucial.
