Snow Foam is a pre-wash: Foam the cool vehicle, let the foam work within the product’s specified time and rinse it off thoroughly. Only then do you proceed to hand washing. The foam loosens contamination before a wash mitt touches the paint. However, it does not always completely remove the remaining traffic film.
For this process you can use our pH-neutral Wash & Snow Foam – in the foamer for the pre-wash and then at the appropriate dosage in the wash bucket. Here you’ll find the dosage, the process and concrete solutions if the foam is too thin or dirt remains.
What does snow foam actually do when washing a car?
Snow foam distributes a cleaning solution as foam over the surface. During the pre-wash, dirt is loosened and then rinsed off with water. This way, less loose dirt enters the next wash step. That helps reduce the risk of wash-induced marring, but it is not a guarantee of a scratch-free wash.
The important limit: A car covered in white foam is not yet a clean car. After rinsing, a thin film can remain on the paint. Remove it with shampoo water and a clean microfiber wash mitt before drying the paint. The drying towel should absorb water, not rub off remaining dirt.
pH-neutral or alkaline?
For regular maintenance, a suitable pH-neutral snow foam such as Wash & Foam is a good choice. For heavy, greasy traffic film, an approved alkaline pre-cleaner can be useful. Use it in a targeted way according to its instructions instead of arbitrarily overdosing the neutral foam or mixing chemicals. Our main article How to wash a car correctly: hand wash and pH value explains the selection.
Dosing Snow Foam: How much Wash & Foam do I need?
A foam cannon on a pressure washer adds extra water to the mix. The mixture in its bottle is therefore not the same concentration that ends up on the paint. Nozzle, water output, and mix setting all affect the result. Don’t simply transfer this dilution to a hand pump sprayer without testing: it can work without additional water mixing and needs a matching dosage.
You don’t need to create the firmest possible “shaving foam”. What matters are the correct product amount, even coverage and the cleaning result after rinsing. More foam alone does not prove better cleaning performance.
Using snow foam correctly in 5 steps
- Prepare the wash bay and vehicle. Use a suitable wash bay where your own products are allowed. Let the paint cool down and work in the shade. Check the foamer’s nozzle, container and connections.
- Rinse off heavy dirt. Remove sand, mud and loose deposits without contact. Whether a specific pre-cleaner is otherwise applied wet or dry depends on its instructions. With Wash & Foam, the goal is an evenly wetted, cool surface.
- Mix the solution and foam the car. Measure water and shampoo. Treat the vehicle evenly without flooding areas for long periods. Use the protective measures stated on the label and avoid spray mist in your face.
- Let it dwell and keep an eye on it. Stay with the vehicle. Follow the dwell time stated on your product. A single general time in minutes for all foamers, weather conditions and cleaners would be unreliable. As soon as the foam starts to dry, rinse it off immediately.
- Rinse thoroughly and hand wash. Work systematically, including lower areas and crevices. Then wash with freshly mixed shampoo solution, rinse again and dry.
For the contact wash we recommend two separate buckets: one for shampoo solution, one for rinsing the mitt. How to combine bucket size, grit guard, and working method is explained in the guide to wash buckets and the two-bucket method. Afterwards, continue with gentle drying without water spots.
Snow foam doesn’t work as expected: Here’s what helps
The foam runs off immediately
First check whether the cannon is drawing shampoo, the pickup tube is seated correctly and the nozzle is clean. Then check mix ratio and device settings. Change only one setting at a time. A thinner foam layer can still clean; don’t increase the dosage just for a nicer photo.
A grey film remains after rinsing
Carry out a normal contact wash with a wash mitt and shampoo. If a specific deposit remains afterwards, treat it in a targeted way with a suitable product. Additional foam passes are no substitute for a thorough contact wash or the right specialist cleaner.
The foam dries too quickly
Rinse off, let the vehicle cool down and then work in smaller sections. Wind, warm panels and sun shorten the workable time. More product does not solve this problem.
Q&A: using snow foam
Does snow foam replace hand washing?
With a normal, thorough vehicle wash, usually not. It prepares the surface. If road film remains, you remove it with shampoo solution and a clean wash mitt.
Can I use any car shampoo as Snow Foam?
No. It has to be designed for that purpose. You can use our Wash & Foam for the bucket wash and in the foam cannon. Adjust the dilution to the specific application.
Do I absolutely need a foam cannon?
No. A thorough contactless pre-rinse with water followed by careful hand washing is also possible without a foam cannon. Snow foam is an additional pre-wash step, not a mandatory purchase.
Is pH-neutral snow foam suitable for ceramic coatings?
Our Wash & Foam is also suitable for ceramic-coated vehicles. Still follow the care instructions for your coating and do not let the product dry on the surface.
